Alone at Dusk on the Cote d’Azur

On the coast of Nice
Cold swelling
Off the warm Mediterranean
The girl to my left
Feet in the water
Hands wrapping an empty liter
Asks me for a cigarette I don’t have
Beach laid out in stones
The sky turns from blue
To orange then lavender
Diamond spotted black
Rushes in like a chill

This is an award-winning piece of poetry I wrote while travelling in France on an ultra-shoestring budget–though you can decide if it deserves that distinction. (You should totally pre-order a copy of my travel guide “Europe on €5 a Day” here!)

You can find a digital representation of its publication here.
